A few months ago, I had the amazing privilege of taking portraits of the Atkinson family. Sharmayne, my good friend, was told a few months before that that her cancer had returned. The prognosis did not look good, and she was about to start her first round of chemotherapy, and so I asked if I could take their family portraits as a gift.
It was the most heartbreaking and wonderful photoshoot I have ever done. We laughed, we cried, and then we cried some more. Poor Sharmayne was in such terrible pain, we would often stop because she was hurting so badly, and we limited poses so that she had to move as little as possible.
In the end though, the pictures turned out magical, and they truly captured the spirit of my amazing friend, and the love and fun she shared with her husband and daughter. Last week, my dear, sweet friend passed away, and suddenly these pictures mean even more. More to me, and more to her family. I am so grateful for them, and for the gift she was in my life.
